Pedraforca
Ocean of rock
The Pedraforca, known simply as El Pedra, is one of the most iconic limestone massifs in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. While it doesn’t stand out for its height—just over 2,500 meters at its main summit, Pollegó Superior—its character and magnetism make it truly special. With its hypnotic silhouette and countless legends, this double-peaked mountain, divided by the deep col known as Enforcadura, is crossed by a great tongue of scree called Tartera. Hidden within are five more summits and an endless sea of contrasting rock formations that, packed into such a small area, make Pedraforca utterly unique.
North face is one of the most alpine and historically rich walls in all of Catalonia—and even the Iberian Peninsula—where the rock itself tells stories of adventure, of epic first ascents in the early 20th century, as well as tragic accidents worthy of a film script. The rock here endures snow and ice winter after winter, giving it a special and sometimes challenging character, yet offering superb quality. Routes of over 600 meters follow vertical dihedrals of perfect limestone interspersed with looser, more delicate sections that demand focus and composure—an authentic adventure wall that leaves no climber indifferent.
In stark contrast, the monolithic south face of Pollegó Inferior boasts some of the finest limestone in the world: immaculate slabs of over 400 meters dotted with pockets, crimps, “water drops,” nearly invisible holds, and flawless tufa pipes (canalissos) that transport you to a vertical paradise you’ll never want to leave. Cabirols, the south face of Calderer, El Gat, the north face of Pollegó Inferior, El Roget—an endless list of faces and sectors make Pedraforca one of the most beautiful multipitch climbing destinations anywhere, home to hundreds of routes of all styles, and something that’s becoming ever rarer: the gift of true solitude on the wall.
Climbing, scrambling, hiking, running—or a mix of it all—at a relaxed or fast pace alike, there’s no better way to discover, or rediscover, this beautiful and beloved MOUNTAIN.
